• Sylvan Lake is our home. It is also a tourist destination. That's one of the attributes that makes Sylvan Lake so special to us all. This presents a tension that we must navigate. We want to be hospitable, but we don't want our guests to overrun our home.​ We can do both. With some clear and strategic thinking we can meet both needs and create a harmonious blend.

Be Fiscally Responsible & Restrained

• "Spend it like it's your own money!"​ Anyone in leadership who has the responsibility of spending other peoples' money, does well to realize how easy it is to spend money when it's not your own. Nobody is immune to this temptation, but being aware of it is the first step in controlling it. Public funds are exactly that - public - and there must always be complete transparency and accountability of how those funds are used.

Adhere to Conservative Principles

• Everyone is responsible for their own actions. It may be true that we are each given different starting points in life, but what we do with what we are given is our responsibility. We each have the freedom to choose our actions, but we do not have the ​freedom to choose the consequences of those actions. This provides freedom with personal responsibility. Limiting government interference, enables this freedom of choice in our lives. However, some government involvement will be necessary to balance the interests of everyone and provide services that benefit all. There also needs to be an openness to new ideas. Traditional thinking needs to be balanced with new ideas and vision.

Manage Sustainable Growth

• Growth is a component of a thriving community. Nothing stays static for long. A healthy community​, like a healthy business, will grow, but if that growth is unchecked and allowed to run rampant without any control, it will be like a runaway train, destined to catastrophic failure. Community growth must be accompanied by appropriate supportive services including utilities, schools, recreational facilities and hospitals. Growth needs a comprehensive sustainable plan.
